Day 1: The word of the day is "long." It took us way to long to get out the door, even longer to reach our destination, and every single minute between 11:00 pm and 2:00 am felt oh so very loooong. Yes, we finally reached our hotel about 2:00 in the morning.
Day 2: Everybody slept in (THANK GOODNESS!) and we went down for the first of many hotel breakfasts. Kieran invented the bacon, butter and english muffin sandwich. The gourmet in him decided that butter was over-the-top and will skip that part next time. ;)
I have to say that Keystone, South Dakota is way prettier than I ever imagined. That's where Mt. Rushmore is located, and just think for a minute about all the pictures of Mt. Rushmore that you've seen. Lots of bare rock, right? Well, this is part of the beauty of traveling: I learned something new. The Black Hills are beautiful! Lots and lots of pine trees and pretty rocks. We had a great time at Mt. Rushmore and driving around in the Black Hills.
The Badlands in South Dakota were a lot of fun to see, too. You could say they are a little bit like Bryce Canyon in Utah, but only a little. We regretted not being there first thing in the morning or at sunset-time, because we could easily see that the light at one of those times of day would make the color of the Badlands look absolutely amazing.
Something else we learned on Day 2 was that even though it is just a lot of straight, flat driving, South Dakota is quite pretty.
My greatest regret of the day was not being able to get a picture of the life-sized metal sculpture we drove past. A skeleton of a T-Rex on a leash being lead by the skeleton of a man. Just out there in the middle of a field next to the freeway. It was awesome.
